On the other hand, the SPHR certification is a more advanced certification, designed for senior-level HR professionals who have significant experience in the field. The SPHR certification covers strategic and leadership-level HR issues, such as talent management, organizational development, business strategy, and global HR. The SPHR certification requires the following: a Master's degree and a minimum of four years of experience in an HR position; a Bachelor's degree and at least five years of experience in an HR position; or seven years of experience in an HR position.

The scope of the two certifications also differs. The PHR certification focuses on the tactical and operational aspects of human resources, such as compliance, benefits, and employee relations. The PHR certification holder is expected to be proficient in the application of HR policies and procedures in the workplace. In contrast, the SPHR certification focuses on the strategic and policy-making aspects of HR. The SPHR certification holder is expected to be able to design and implement HR strategies that align with the organization's goals and objectives.

Another difference between the two certifications is their target audience. The PHR certification is intended for HR professionals who are at the beginning of their careers or are in mid-level HR roles. The PHR certification provides a foundational knowledge of HR concepts and prepares professionals for more senior HR roles in the future. The SPHR certification, on the other hand, is designed for HR professionals who are in senior-level HR roles or are aspiring to such roles. The SPHR certification is aimed at developing the strategic and leadership skills needed to manage the HR function effectively.

Both the PHR and SPHR certifications are highly valued in the HR profession. They demonstrate a commitment to excellence in HR and an understanding of the complex and changing HR landscape. In terms of the exam content, the PHR and SPHR certification exams differ significantly. The PHR certification exam is three hours long consisting of 25 pretest questions and 90 scored questions, covering topics such as business management, talent planning and acquisition, learning and development, total rewards, and Employee and Labor Relations. The SPHR certification exam is one hour shorter than the PHR exam but has more questions: 25 pretest questions and 115 questions. Covering topics such as business and HR strategy, talent planning and acquisition learning and development, and employee relations and engagement.

Overall, an SPHR is a more experienced and knowledgeable professional in the field of human resources, while a PHR is less experienced and professional. An SPHR is typically responsible for more strategic tasks, while a PHR is typically responsible for more tactical tasks.
